To become involved in refereeing, Basketball Australia encourages you to speak with the officials’ manager or referee coordinator at your local association. You can learn more about Referee pathways and information sources by clicking here.To become a scoretable official, beginners can take a Level 0 course through their local association which consists of a four-hour session, as well as an open book exam.

After completing a year on the Junior Panel, referees are invited to undertake the Level 2 referees course and possibly be invited to referee for the Big V.To reach this level is a great achievement and it is possible you may be identified by Basketball Australia to participate in the National Referees Development Program.The next step is to progress to Level 3 and 4 and, based on performance, gain selection onto the National Panel.
Referee courses are run throughout the year, with development pathways in place to allow career progression from junior club basketball to QBL, right through to the international level of officiating, in line with Basketball Australia’s officials development framework.
Becoming a basketball referee can be a challenging and rewarding career. Basketball Victoria’s Technical Officials Commission is always on the lookout for potential referees and there is a defined referee pathway if you are willing to take the next step.
